A note on the practice, and the person behind it.
Argo Academics is my Melbourne-made English tutoring practice. Since 2023 I have taught students the habits of considered work that outlast every test they will sit. I have refined the practice over thousands of hours of reading student writing, marking it, and responding — and through the meticulous work of seeing what actually carries a student forward.
I named it for the ship that carried the Argonauts on the original voyage of discovery, as told by Apollonius of Rhodes in the Argonauticaof the third century BCE. The archetypal journey to secure the Golden Fleece is the metaphor I teach by — a student’s academic voyage, charted and held.
I’m Callum Hay, a writer and educator. My research considers the restrictive potential of high-stakes testing and accountability models on student development, intellectual depth, and the kinds of teaching that produce both — conducted toward a Master of Public Policy and Management at The University of Melbourne (expected Dec. 2026), building on a Bachelor of Arts (Film, Literature) from Monash University. I’m a Global Youth Ambassador with Theirworld, and hold IBM’s certification in Generative AI in Education — the first of a standing line of credentials I mean to keep current as the field moves.
I write in two registers: formal research, and more personally in the Journal. That quieter side of the practice holds my short fiction, media criticism and essays both personal and critical. It’s a creative reference for the work itself, and an indication of the literary sensibility I invite Argo students to develop.
