What an online lesson looks like
One hour, weekly, at a fixed time, over Google Meet. The writing sits in shared documents, so student and teacher work on the same page at the same moment — a sentence rebuilt live, a paragraph annotated while its writer watches. Everything around the lesson — the writing, the shared documents, the lesson link — is handled through the family portal.
What a student needs is short: a laptop or tablet with a working camera and microphone, a steady internet connection, and a quiet place to work.
Does online teaching actually work for English?
English, more than most subjects, is document work — reading closely, writing, correcting, reading back. A shared document carries all of it, which is why the teaching online is identical to the teaching in person: the same practitioner, the same close reading of your child’s actual writing, the same weekly rhythm. Eleven years of VCAA examiner reports say the skills that decide English results are craft habits built over time — and habit-building is a cadence, not a location.
Who it suits, and where
Students from Year 3 through to VCE, in any Australian state — lesson times are arranged around your time zone. Interstate families work with the same materials as Melbourne ones: the term calendar for every state is part of the practice’s own reference set. The one thing distance rules out is the occasional in-person lesson, which is limited to Melbourne’s inner suburbs, by request, with a two-hour minimum.
Who teaches, and what it costs
One practitioner — Callum Hay — teaches every lesson personally; there is no roster and no matching process. Lessons are $120 an hour for the standard weekly online lesson. It begins with a free discovery call and a free trial lesson, and pausing between terms is always available.
