What preparation actually needs is full-length practice in the same format and under the same clock. Each of the three papers covers Verbal Reasoning and Reading Comprehension — the two English components these exams lean on hardest. Verbal reasoning works through synonyms and antonyms, similarities and dissimilarities, inference, deduction and conditional reasoning. Reading comprehension runs unseen passages with questions on argument, tone, inference and the conventions of language. The worked solutions are the part worth having. Every question is answered in full, showing the reasoning to the right answer and why each wrong option fails — which is where the actual learning sits, because a bare answer key tells a student they were wrong without telling them what they misread.

Sit the first one cold, timed, with no preparation. It will probably feel uncomfortable, and that is the point: it is a diagnostic, not a performance, and its only job is to show which question types are weak. Mark it against the worked solutions and read the reasoning for every question missed, not just the answer. Then study the weak types — the assessment guide has a chapter for each — and leave a few weeks before sitting the second paper. Sit the third close to the real exam, under strict conditions, to test pace rather than technique. Three papers sat in one week teaches almost nothing; three papers sat across a term with study in between is a genuine preparation.

Students in roughly Years 5 to 9 preparing for a private-school scholarship exam, a Victorian selective entry assessment, or a SEAL program entrance test. The English question types across those overlap almost entirely, which is why one pack serves all three. They are pitched at the difficulty these exams actually use — deliberately harder than school work, because a practice paper that flatters a student prepares them for nothing.

The pack is designed to be sat three times with study in between, and that only works if you keep the scores. The score tracker gives you a clock for each section and records two numbers per section — what you got within the time, and what you got in the end — then reads the gap between them, which is what tells you whether the problem is pace or technique.
