What VCE scaling actually does
Every VCE study, from VTAC's own 2025 table — and the arithmetic showing why choosing subjects for their scaling is usually the wrong move.
Scaling is the part of the VCE that generates the most advice and the least evidence. The advice is usually some version of pick subjects that scale up. VTAC publishes the table that advice is supposedly based on, and the table does not support it.
Of the 94 studies VTAC scaled in 2025, 35 send a raw study score of 30 upward and 59 hold it level or send it down. Scaling is comparative, not generous: a study scales up because the students who took it also did well in their other studies. It is a measure of the company you kept, not a bonus the study hands out.
What does scaling do to one study?
English scales down. Its scaled mean is 28.2. A raw study score of 30 becomes 28.

Does picking a “high-scaling” study beat doing well?
English at 38 scales to 36.6. Specialist Mathematics at 25 scales to 36.0.
English finishes 0.6 scaled points ahead, as it was on raw marks. Scaling narrowed or widened the gap but did not decide it.
Scaled scores between VTAC’s published points are interpolated, so treat the decimals as indicative. VTAC computes to two decimal places by a method it does not publish, and its report gives seven anchor points “to give an indication”. This tool does the same and says so.
Does VCE English scale up or down?
English scales down. Its scaled mean is 28.2, and a raw study score of 30 becomes 28. English Language is a different study and scales up — a raw 30 becomes 33. The two are routinely conflated, including by sites selling tutoring in them.
English as an Additional Language is the case that defeats one-sentence claims entirely. It scales down hardest at the bottom of the range and slightly up at the top, so “EAL scales up” and “EAL scales down” are both false.
Can a scaled study score be above 50?
Yes, and this surprises people. Scaled study scores are not capped. Specialist Mathematics scaled a raw 50 to 55 in 2025, and a raw 40 to 51. A raw study score and a scaled study score are different quantities and should never be compared directly.
So does subject choice matter at all?
Sometimes — and the honest version of this page has to say so. Across every pair of scaled studies, a five-mark raw deficit is reversed by scaling in about 19% of pairs. Scaling is not nothing.
But the comparison above is the one that matters: a raw 38 in English finishes ahead of a raw 25 in Specialist Mathematics, the strongest-scaling study in the state. The claim worth making is the narrow one. Scaling matters less than doing well. Choose the studies you will work hardest in.
Where these numbers come from
Every figure on this page is read from VTAC’s 2025 Scaling Report, published 2025-12-11. VTAC publishes it as a PDF and gives seven anchor points per study “to give an indication”; the formal process uses two decimal places by a method VTAC does not publish. Scores between the anchors are interpolated here, so treat the decimals as indicative rather than official.
21 of the 115 studies in the report are marked “small study or no candidates” and carry no figures. They are kept in the data rather than dropped: a study too small to scale is a different fact from a study that does not exist.
