What is your mark actually worth?

Put a SAC or exam mark against VCAA's published distribution for 23 studies and see the study score range it points to — including the part every other calculator leaves out.

A study score is not a percentage. VCAA’s own handbook says it “indicates how a VCE student performed in relation to all other VCE students who undertook the study in the same year”. Every student in the state is ranked, and that ranking is standardised to a mean of 30 and a standard deviation of 7.

Which is why the VCE English exam mean of 32.9 out of 60 — barely above half marks — corresponds to a study score of about 30. Half marks is the middle of the state, because the scale measures position rather than content mastered.

A mark of 33 out of 60 sits around the 50th percentile of the 40,768 students who sat this assessment in 2025.

Coursework marks are statistically moderated against your school's cohort. Two students with identical marks at different schools finish with different study scores, and we cannot see your cohort — nobody outside VCAA can. Treat this as a range, and treat any tool that gives you a single number as guessing at it.

Why this gives a range and not a number

Because a number would be a lie. Coursework marks are statistically moderatedagainst each school’s cohort performance on the external exam. Two students with identical SAC marks at different schools receive different study scores, and the gap can be several points.

What this tool does instead is smaller and defensible: it places your mark in the published state distribution for that assessment, and reports the study score that position corresponds to. Where the assessment is the external examination, that inference is at its strongest — the exam is marked centrally and moderation does not touch it. On coursework the band is wider, and it should be.

What a study score of 30 means

The middle of the state. Not a pass, not a disappointment — the definition of the midpoint. Roughly two-thirds of students in any study score between 23 and 37, and a 40 sits near the 92nd percentile. Parents reading a 30 as a poor result are reading a ranking as though it were a percentage.

Where these numbers come from

VCAA publishes a graded assessment file for every VCE study, giving the grade distribution, mean, standard deviation, score ranges and enrolment for each assessment. This tool reads 23 of them, covering 69 graded assessments from 2025.

One detail worth stating, because it defeats most attempts at this: mark scales differ by study and by assessment. The English examination is out of 60, Biology’s is out of 240, and Foundation Mathematics has an assessment out of 30. There are fifteen distinct denominators across these studies, so a mark cannot be read without knowing which one applies.

VCAA publishes all of it as PDF only — there is no spreadsheet of any of it. The figures here were extracted from those documents and are re-checked on every build.
