NAPLAN practice tests, and what practice is worth.

There is free NAPLAN practice, and it is published by the authority that writes the test. Most of what a search returns is a subscription with a trial attached. Below: what exists at no cost, what “NAPLAN-style” actually means, and what the research says about practising in a way that changes anything.

Are there free NAPLAN practice tests?

Yes, and the best of them come from ACARA rather than from a tutoring company. The public demonstration site is the real test platform, open to anyone, with no account and no trial period. The writing marking guides are the criteria markers actually use, with scored student scripts. And nine years of complete released tests sit on ACARA’s archive pages with their answer keys.

What a search mostly returns instead is commercial practice with a free tier attached — a seven-day trial, or three sample questions, or a first test before a paywall. Those products may be perfectly good. They are simply not free, and the distinction disappears in a results page where everything is labelled “free”.

What “NAPLAN-style” means

It means a provider has written questions that resemble NAPLAN questions, and is telling you so. It is a description of their own product. It is not a NAPLAN test, it is not written or reviewed by ACARA, and it carries no endorsement from them — which is why the phrase exists at all. A test that was NAPLAN would be called NAPLAN.

That is not an accusation of bad faith. Resemblance is genuinely useful: a child who has never seen the format will spend part of the real test working out the interface instead of the questions. But the phrase is doing quiet work in a results page, and a parent comparing options deserves to know it is a claim about similarity, made by the seller.

Why no paper can reproduce the test

The current NAPLAN is adaptive. Students at a given level start with a similar set of questions, and what comes next depends on how they answer — so a printed paper cannot reproduce the path a particular child takes through the real test. ACARA states it directly:

That design reaches the number on the report. ACARA scores NAPLAN on “both the number of items the student answers correctly and the average difficulty of the items that were assigned”, so a student who answers the same number correctly but follows a less complex pathway is likely to receive a lower scale score TST-21. That is not unfairness — the pathway follows from the student’s own answers, and scaling exists so scores mean the same thing across pathways. It is the answer to a question parents do ask: how two children who got the same number right came home with different numbers.

This is the fact that reframes the whole category. A fixed set of questions — free or paid, a released 2016 paper or a subscription’s newest module — cannot reproduce an adaptive test, because the adaptivity is the thing. What practice material can do is show the format, the question types and the tools. That is worth doing. It is a smaller claim than the one the category tends to make.

What the evidence says about practising

Practice testing is one of the better-supported study techniques there is. A review of ten common techniques rated it, alongside spacing study sessions apart, in its highest utility band, on the grounds that it benefits learners of different ages and abilities and has been shown to work across many kinds of test — and, the authors add more cautiously, in educational settings too PRC-01. That last clause is doing real work: most of the evidence underneath the rating is laboratory study rather than classroom trials.

A later meta-analysis, pooling 242 international studies and 169,179 participants and weighted towards US and UK laboratory work, re-ran the same ten techniques and agreed on the ranking — distributed practice and practice testing again came out on top. But it found the benefit depends heavily on the student: a mean effect of 0.47 for lower-ability students against −0.11 for higher-ability ones, the second of those being no measurable benefit at all. Its authors add that most of the studies pooled measured surface or factual recall, and caution against generalising to deeper learning — an international evidence base, not an Australian one PRC-13. Both figures rest on a small number of effects (28 and 58), so the direction is better established than the size.

Read together, those two entries say something more useful than either alone. Practice testing is worth doing, and it is worth most for the student who is behind — which is usually the child whose NAPLAN result prompted the search. For a student already writing well, the same hour spent writing something and having it read closely is the better bet.

The same literature is much less kind to how practice usually gets used. Three findings matter, and all three cut against cramming papers into the fortnight before the test:

  • Spacing beats massing. A meta-analysis of 839 assessments across 317 experiments in verbal recall found consistent benefits from spreading study episodes apart rather than stacking them, and that the best gap grows as the time before the test grows PRC-07. Those experiments are mostly laboratory recall tasks — word lists and prose passages, not practice papers — so what transfers is the principle, not the timings. Four papers across four weeks beats four papers across one weekend.

    That principle is worth stating with its limit attached, because the largest attempt to run it across varied real classrooms mostly did not reproduce it. Researchers at a US university spaced quiz questions across a semester in nine introductory undergraduate courses there; across the eight non-mathematics courses the pooled improvement was 1.50%, with a confidence interval crossing zero, and it only became significant once the calculus course was added — at 2.06%, a lower bound the authors call “not far above zero” PRC-15. They put nearly 90% of the variation between courses rather than between spaced and massed. What separated the courses that worked from those that did not is the useful part: calculus was the only one to show the full pattern, and one chemistry course reached significance once unusable questions were removed. In calculus the questions were fill-in-the-blank and the feedback was informative, while the rest ran mostly multiple choice with feedback students were never required to open. Which is the same conclusion the next paragraph reaches from a different direction — spacing is not a schedule that works on its own.

    A second classroom study points the same way from a very different place. Two Italian Year 5 classes studied real history texts from their own curriculum; self-testing with feedback beat re-reading heavily, 67.7% against 41.3% on a delayed test, while stretching the gap between study sessions from one day to four — with the testing held constant — changed nothing at all, 45.9% against 44.6% — an Italian primary school, not an Australian one PRC-16. Those Italian researchers are careful about their own null, and so is this page: because every child in that comparison was already self-testing, they say the testing itself “may have masked” any additional benefit from the longer gap. It is not evidence that spacing is worthless.

    Taken together, though, the two are worth one adjustment in how you plan. Different countries, different ages, different subjects, and the same shape each time: the retrieving is doing the work, and the calendar is doing less than the popular advice implies. So space the papers out — there is no reason not to, and the laboratory evidence for it is real — but do not expect the spacing to be what helps. What helps is that each sitting is a genuine attempt to retrieve, and that somebody tells the child what went wrong afterwards.
  • Testing beats re-reading, but only later. In a US experiment with 180 undergraduates, students who sat a single recall test did worsethan students who restudied when tested five minutes later — 75% against 81% — and then better after two days (68% against 54%) and after a week (56% against 42%) PRC-08. The technique that looks worse on the day is the one that holds. Worth knowing before judging a practice session by how it went.
  • Mixing beats blocking. With 126 Year 7 students doing mathematics, interleaving problem types within a session rather than doing one type in a block produced higher scores, and the advantage was larger on a delayed test than an immediate one PRC-10. That is a mathematics finding in one year level, not a NAPLAN literacy one, and it is cited here for the mechanism rather than as a NAPLAN result. Australia’s own education research body draws the same boundary in its 2024 guidance for teachers: interleaving, it says, “is a form of variation that is most effective in maths and science” PRC-14. So it is worth knowing about and it is not the thing to build a writing practice around.

And the gate on all of it is feedback. A meta-analysis of educational feedback found a medium overall effect on learning (d = 0.48), with enough variation between studies that the authors say feedback cannot be treated as one consistent thing: it is more effective the more information it carries. Feedback explaining the nature of an error and how to correct it scored d = 0.99, against d = 0.24 for simple reinforcement or punishment PRC-11. Which is the practical problem with a stack of practice papers at home. A score out of forty tells a child almost nothing. The marking guides linked above are useful precisely because they are the closest thing to real feedback a parent can get for free: they show what a marker rewards, criterion by criterion, on real scripts.

The studies above are overseas research — the testing and interleaving experiments both American, the spacing finding a meta-analysis of hundreds of laboratory verbal-recall experiments, the nine-course classroom study American undergraduates at a single university, the Year 5 history study 33 Italian children at one primary school, and the ten-techniques re-analysis an international pool weighted towards US and UK laboratory work. The exception is the Australian guidance quoted on interleaving, which is a synthesis for teachers rather than a new study. None of it examined NAPLAN. They are cited for how practice works, not for what it does to a NAPLAN band. Nothing in this register supports a claim that practice raises a band, and none is made here.

When the test actually is

Worth knowing before planning anything, because the spacing argument above only works with time on the clock. ACARA publishes the test window four years ahead:

How to use it, if you are going to

  1. Start with the demonstration site, not a paper.The interface is the part a released PDF cannot show, and it is the part that costs marks when it is unfamiliar. Half an hour, once, removes most of that.
  2. Read the marking guide first.For writing especially. A child who has seen what the criteria reward is writing towards something; a child who has not is guessing. The scored samples do more work than the criteria list.
  3. Space it out, and keep it short.Four sittings across a month, not a weekend of papers. Spaced practice sits in the same highest-utility band as practice testing itself PRC-02.
  4. Mark it properly, or do not mark it.A number out of forty is not feedback. Going through three wrong answers and finding out why they were wrong is.
  5. Stop before it becomes the point.NAPLAN is a snapshot the school uses. A child who reads widely and writes often will do well on it without a single practice paper, and the reverse does not hold.
For a parent

If your child is anxious about it

  • One pass through the demonstration site, so nothing about the screen is a surprise on the day. Familiarity is the cheapest reassurance available and it takes half an hour.
  • Do not make a timed paper the first contact with the format. Untimed first; timed later, if at all.
  • Do not treat a practice score as a prediction. The real test adapts and a fixed paper does not, so the number does not transfer.

The honest summary

Free NAPLAN practice exists and it is the authority’s own. It will show your child the format and show you what markers reward. Used the way the evidence suggests — spaced out, properly marked, stopped early — it is a reasonable use of a few hours.

What it will not do is move a band by itself, and any page telling you otherwise is selling something. The thing that moves writing is writing often and being read closely by someone who can say what to change. That is true in March and it is true in the other eleven months, which is rather the point.
