Assessors saidAssessors' benchmark note for weaker argument analysis: “Identification but limited attempt at analysis.” Naming a device is still not analysing it.

How to use a past exam well
The papers reward a specific practice: unseen topics, timed planning, and marking the plan before the essay. Eleven years of reports say the recurring failures are not text knowledge but craft — prepared responses, unanswered topics, features named but not analysed and plot retold. Practising past papers without addressing those habits rehearses the mistake. A mark out of 60 on a practice paper is also worth reading honestly rather than optimistically — you can place that mark against VCAA’s published distribution and get a range rather than a number. Before starting a paper, it helps to know how the Section A topics themselves are built — the same short set of forms and instructions repeats across all ten coded years. Section C rewards a different discipline again: analysing an argument rather than naming its techniques. The 2026 exam timetablesets the horizon that practice runs toward. One caution on older papers: the set texts turn over, so a Section A topic from an earlier year may be on a text no longer listed — the 2026 and 2027 lists show which are current and which are leaving.
