Assessors saidAssessors' benchmark note for weaker argument analysis: “Identification but limited attempt at analysis.” Naming a device is still not analysing it.
- 2024
Assessors saidFirst year of the revised study design — and assessors still flagged “contorting previously prepared responses” to fit the set task.
- 2023
Assessors said“Identification of a linguistic feature is only the very beginning of analysis” — and many students missed the elements of topics that “narrowed the scope of the task”.
- 2022

How to use a past exam well
The papers reward a specific practice: unseen topics, timed planning, and marking the plan before the essay. Eleven years of reports say the recurring failures are not text knowledge but craft — prepared responses, unanswered topics, features named but not analysed and plot retold. Practising past papers without addressing those habits rehearses the mistake. The 2026 exam timetable sets the horizon that practice runs toward.
